Hideki Matsuyama's Caddie, Shota Hayafuji, Goes Viral After Masters Win JOSEPH SALVADORAPR 11, 2021-si.com
Hideki Matsuyama made history on Sunday when he became the first Japanese golfer to win The Masters at 10-under. But his caddie, Shota Hayafuji, garnered some surprise attention on Sunday in Augusta, Ga.

After the final stroke to secure his first green jacket, Matsuyama could be seen with tears in his eyes as he walked off the green. But Hayafuji was still on the green.

While most of the cameras were on Matsuyama, his faithful caddie solemnly put the pin back in the hole, removed his hat and bowed after the historic win.

Twitter and golf fans around the world loved the stoic sign of respect, including Matsuyama. After conquering Augusta, the 29-year-old was so happy for his friend Hayafuji.

Hideki Matsuyama's caddie bowing respectfully to Augusta symbolizes emotional Masters win for a proud Japan-CNN.com
After winning the Masters, cameras were naturally trained on a visibly emotional Hideki Matsuyama as he took in the magnitude of his triumph.

But in the aftermath of Sunday's success, another image also went viral -- Matsuyama's caddie Shota Hayafuji collecting the flag from the 18th hole's flagstick as a memento and then turning to face the fairway, removing his hat and bowing as a mark of respect to the famed Augusta course.
In Japanese culture, the bow originated as a gesture of deference "that began as an exclusive practice of the nobility more than a thousand years ago" but has evolved into a form of greeting, according to National Geographic.
"When the final putt went in, I really wasn't thinking of anything," Matsuyama told the media during his post-round press conference.
"But then hugging Xander [Schauffele] ... when I saw my caddie, Shota and hugged him, I was happy for him because this is his first victory on the bag. And then it started sinking in -- the joy of being a Masters champion."

Hideki Matsuyama's Masters victory sealed with a bow, as an understated celebration sums up his historic triumph-abc.net.au

In the moments after Hideki Matsuyama's historic Masters win, you could have forgiven him a moment of unbridled emotion, both in celebration of his first major win and recognition of the weight of his accomplishment.

But despite becoming Japan's first winner at the Masters — and of any of men's golf's major tournaments — it wasn't Matsuyama's reaction that most caught the eye.

Footage soon emerged of the new champion's caddy Shota Hayafuji alone on the 18th green, well away from the fanfare surrounding Matsuyama.

Without seeking to attract any attention to himself, Hayafuji placed the flagstick back in the hole, removed his cap, and bowed to the course upon which he and Matsuyama had just enjoyed their greatest day.
